<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO was approached by a client in the automotive sector to optimize a head-up display (HUD) system. Although operational, this system did not meet the car manufacturer&#8217;s requirements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The device in question used an optical concept based on the projection of an image via two curved mirrors and an output window, which was then reflected onto the windshield. This system had to meet strict criteria imposed by the customer, such as overall size and visibility characteristics, while maintaining high image quality. In order to meet the car manufacturer&#8217;s objectives, the customer called on PISÉO to optimize its head-up display. After a critical analysis of the existing system (performance and construction), PISÉO&#8217;s engineers developed an <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/calculation-and-simulation-tools-prototyping/">optical design</a> that solved the problems identified.</p>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-6aizewb" data-block-id="6aizewb"><p class="stk-block-text__text">A HUD (Head-Up Display) is an augmented reality device that projects information directly into the driver&#8217;s field of vision, in this case onto the windshield. This type of technology, commonly used in the automotive industry, also has applications in defense, healthcare, manufacturing, and video games via augmented reality headsets.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The UHD system that PISÉO has been working on consists of an OLED screen, a set of mirrors, and the windshield as a projection screen. Each component must be optimized to provide excellent image quality that is legible and free of <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/our-skills/stray-light/">stray light</a>, while meeting constraints in terms of space, environment, industrialization, and cost.</p>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-tnceg44" data-block-id="tnceg44"><p class="stk-block-text__text">To meet the customer&#8217;s specific needs, PISÉO engineers used <a href="https://www.ansys.com/fr-fr/products/optics/ansys-zemax-opticstudio">Zemax OpticStudio</a> optical design and simulation software. The main focus was on the mirrors, a key factor in meeting space constraints while maintaining high image quality.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO engineers modeled the optical system in Zemax, optimized the design using their extensive experience in the field, and simulated the achievable performance. This work also made it possible to anticipate and correct recurring problems in augmented reality systems, such as ghost images, luminance management for day and night visibility, and distortion minimization. This optical design was carried out taking into account the industrial feasibility of the optics and the target cost.</p>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-njfypvg" data-block-id="njfypvg"><p class="stk-block-text__text">In order to differentiate itself from the competition, the car manufacturer set ambitious image quality objectives for the logo projector:<br><strong>Very fine detail rendering :</strong> the fineness of the projected details reinforces the precision of the image and its readability. This requires the use of optical projection systems with lenses with no aberrations.<br><strong>Absence of chromatism :</strong> Chromatism is an optical aberration that causes colors to change. In imaging, it can be induced by optical systems that are not sufficiently optimized to reduce its effect.<br><strong>Brightness – level of illumination on the ground and uniformity :</strong> this characteristic is essential to perceive the projected image correctly in any environment. In the case of a logo projector, it requires the use of a sufficiently powerful light source and an illumination system coupled with an optical imaging system.</p></div>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7z9gile" data-block-id="7z9gile"><p class="stk-block-text__text">To meet the high technical requirements, a custom solution was designed and prototyped by PISÉO engineers: they developed  an ultra-compact logo projector that combines an optical imaging system and an optical illumination system.<br>The Optical Imaging System integrates a limited number of dedicated lenses with aspherical surfaces. This combination of lenses makes it possible to correct optical aberrations while preserving the economic competitiveness of the system. Particular attention was paid to the materials used in order to prevent chromatic aberrations and preserve high injection quality during the manufacture of the lenses.<br>The Optical Illumination System integrates a high-luminance white LED that provides sufficient optical efficiency, and a flux collection lens that optimizes the illumination of the mask while respecting the constraints imposed by the optical imaging system.<br>The design of the logo projector followed a rigorous sequential process to arrive at a robust and competitive industrial solution. The skills in the development of optical illumination and imaging systems of PISÉO engineers were put to use during this development. They also mobilized their design and optical simulation support tools to quickly evaluate the concepts they imagined. In particular, they used LightTools for the optical illumination system and Zemax for the optical imaging system. The false color and realistic renderings made it possible to accurately determine the achievable visual performance. <br>Tests in PISÉO&#8217;s optical laboratory made it possible to characterize the candidate LEDs precisely and make an informed choice of components, as well as to validate the performance of a prototype.<br><br><a id="_msocom_1"></a> </p></div>

These anomalies can be caused by an inadequate arrangement of LEDs, poorly designed diffusers, or <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/light-guide-design/">light guides </a>that do not direct the light correctly.<br>To identify the precise causes, PISÉO engineers followed a rigorous methodology. The first step consisted of a luminance mapping in <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-laboratory-posts/">the laboratory</a>, which provided a visualization of the distribution of light over the entire surface of the lamp, highlighting the problem areas. A critical analysis of the lamp construction was then conducted, focusing on the physical design of the optical components, including the arrangement of the LEDs and the materials used.<br> <br>A key point of the analysis concerns the geometry of the light guides. The engineers thus examined in detail the structure of the guides to identify design defects that could lead to light leaks. These leaks often result from poor light guidance, where light escapes or disperses in an uncontrolled manner, causing an irregular distribution. Finally, the optical system was modeled in <a href="https://www.synopsys.com/optical-solutions/lighttools.html">LightTools</a>, where a simulation allowed the engineers to locate the sources of the defects and propose optimal solutions.</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the automotive sector, the majority of road accidents are due to human error by the driver. Thus, it appears essential, in order to reduce the number of accidents, to provide the driver with assistance in order to inform him about his environment, warn him of a situation of imminent risk of accident, and possibly act on driving the vehicle in his place. The development of ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) sensors aims to achieve this, and ultimately lead to the driving of the autonomous vehicle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All ADAS systems mix sensors of different technologies, ranging from ultrasonic proximity detectors for parking assistance to blind-spot RADAR detectors and even LiDAR for the detection of obstacles in front of the vehicle. Moreover, camera-based ADAS sensors, such as the front camera system, provide a 360° view around the vehicle – and when installed inside the cabin, such as DMS and OMS, provide information on the driver&#8217;s state of alertness, the number of occupants, and whether their seat belts are properly fastened. To complement the camera-based ADAS systems, electronic rearview mirrors, or e-mirrors, offer the driver a better view of the outside environment from the cabin. These systems (also called CMS or SRVM according to car manufacturers) consist of a monitor in addition to a camera to present a field of observation to the driver in the best conditions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Additionally, some ADAS sensors with cameras are being considered for installation in aircraft.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In all cases, these systems contribute to increasing the level of active and passive safety of a vehicle, and must ensure reliable and repeatable detection or measurement of their environment, in all conditions of use. They also must meet regulatory requirements and applicable standards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To guarantee a high level of performance in increasingly broad uses, the needs for characterizing the performance of these systems are increasing.</p>

<li>The “front camera” system is a device which is positioned behind the windshield, at the level of the interior mirror. It observes the space in front of the vehicle to read road signs such as speed limit, no overtaking, or end of construction. This system also makes it possible to provide information at night to the adaptive high-beam management system, by detecting entry into a built-up area and the presence of other vehicles coming in the opposite direction (or traveling in the same direction) in order to lower the headlight beams so as not to distract other drivers. Moreover, the front camera system can also detect lane markings&nbsp;to warn the driver of an unintentional crossing of a solid or dotted line. Finally, the system allows the detection of an obstacle which may appear in front of the vehicle, such as a pedestrian emerging from a line of vehicles parked alongside the road.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tests and characteristics measured for these systems are described below. Some of the tests are performed in the visible and near IR ranges:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>• System field of view (FOV): controls the observation and detection space of the system.</li>



<li>• Spatial resolution of the system: allows for measuring the spatial resolution of the system – that is to say, to determine the dimensions of the smallest object detectable by the system. This measurement is done through the measurement of the MTF.</li>



<li>• The signal-to-noise ratio of the system: measures the detection power of the system according to the signal level it receives. This measurement is done by measuring the SNR.</li>



<li>• Distortion: allows for measuring the distortion of the image delivered by the camera in order to take it into account in the detection algorithms. This is measured using a checkerboard pattern.</li>



<li>• Color rendering – colorimetry: the colorimetry is measured on a Rezchcker chart. The color differences of the colored areas of the target are measured, and the values &nbsp;DeltaE<sub>00</sub> and &nbsp;DeltaC<sub>00</sub> are calculated.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The CMS system (camera monitor system), also known as SRVM (smart rear virtual mirror), or even electronic mirror (e-mirror), generally consists of two cameras, display screens inside the cockpit, and an electronic control unit. It replaces traditional exterior mirrors to provide the driver with a better in-cabin view of the outside environment. The field of vision is wider, which improves visibility in poor weather or lighting conditions, and also helps to give safety alerts. Thanks to its lightness and streamlined shape, it also helps to reduce CO2 emissions and save energy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tests and characteristics measured on these systems are as follows:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Magnifications: a measure of system magnification and aspect ratio.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Sharpness and depth of field: determined by MTF measurement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Resolving power: the resolving power is measured by measuring MTF at several points in the field of view.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Distortion: the geometric distortion measurement is performed on a checkerboard pattern.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Contrasts: contrasts are measured in different camera illumination conditions (e.g., under glare) and different screen illumination conditions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Uniformity: directional uniformity and lateral uniformity are measured under daytime conditions with diffuse daylight.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Artifacts: the analysis of the number of spots that appear on the screen when the camera is dazzled by an intense light source.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Color rendering – colorimetry: the colorimetry is measured on a Rezchcker chart. The color differences of the colored areas of the target are measured, and the values ?E00 and ?C00 are calculated.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Shades of gray: eight levels of gray are measured, and an analysis of their perception is carried out.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Flicker: flicker measurement according to ISO 13406-2:2001.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Latency time: measurement of the time between the appearance of a light signal in front of the camera, and its appearance on the system screen.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Image formation time: the measurement of the image formation time is carried out according to the ISO 9241-305:2008 standard.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The DMS (driver monitoring system) is an assisted driver monitoring device. Its role is to alert the driver to pay attention to controlling the vehicle. The DMS is equipped with several functions, such as head movement analysis, gaze tracking, face recognition, eye blink frequency detection, and body position, all of which monitor the level of driver fatigue and distraction.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The OMS (occupant monitoring system) is a device similar to the DMS, but whose field of view is extended to the entire cabin of the vehicle and not limited to the driver alone.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tests and characteristics measured on these systems are as follows. For the tests of the DMS systems, the measurements are carried out in the near IR range at 940 nm; on OMS systems, measurements are made in the visible and near IR ranges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• System field of view (FOV): controls the observation and detection space of the system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Spatial resolution of the system: allows for measuring the spatial resolution of the system – in other words, to determine the dimensions of the smallest object detectable by the system. This measurement is done through the measurement of the MTF.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• The signal-to-noise ratio of the system: measures the detection power of the system according to the signal level it receives. This measurement is done by measuring the SNR.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">• Distortion: allows for measuring the distortion of the image delivered by the camera, in order to take it into account in the detection algorithms. It is measured using a checkerboard pattern.</p>

To fully understand the objectives of the bench, the PISÉO experts first analyzed these application requirements and the optoelectronic architecture of the system to be calibrated. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the end of the specification work, which lasted several weeks, PISÉO was commissioned to develop and build the bench. Mechanical design work was thus carried out for the structure supporting the measuring equipment. The algorithms supporting the calibration method were coded, and all the functions for interfacing with the customer&#8217;s system were developed, including the human-machine interface (HMI).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once all the elements of the bench were developed and supplied, they were integrated into the bench within PISÉO’s laboratory. Final operational tests and fine-tuning completed the setup of the bench.</p>

The results of this work made it possible to validate the bench and trigger its delivery to the customer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The project concluded with the training of the customer&#8217;s personnel in charge of the use of the bench and their final approval.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Objectives of the report based on PISÉO&#8217;s &amp; A2MAC1&#8217;s collaboration</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The integration of LED technologies has given automotive lighting manufacturers the opportunity for strong differentiation via new designs and functionalities. Automotive headlamps are subject to many technical and aesthetic considerations allowing multiple architectures and optical solutions. Therefore, OEMs and Tier1/2s are looking for accurate technical and performance insights of commercialized devices in order to consolidate their own product strategies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://piseo.fr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PISÉO</a> and <a href="https://www.a2mac1.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A2MAC1</a> each provide unique complementary skills: PISÉO in LED-based system design and performance characterization, and A2MAC1 in automotive benchmarking. Given the complexity of a complete technical and performance analysis of a modern LED headlamp and A2MAC1’s long relationship with the automotive industry, the two companies collaborated to develop this report.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A2MAC1 provided access to the vehicle and set up the test, and PISÉO performed the technical and performance analysis of the headlamp.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Both companies are committed to providing the markets with the best possible benchmark data and insight into commercially available cutting-edge LED-based headlamps.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The analyses of both the architecture and the photometric performance confirm a high-quality product.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sophisticated optical solutions have been designed and implemented to meet strong performance and integration requirements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ID3 headlamp embeds an ADB function whereby 1 to 11 LEDs are selected to extend the beam and cover more than the low beam. However, the resolution of the lit areas, being limited to 11 LEDs, appears low compared to other ADB headlamps installed on high-range vehicles, but it is a step up for this function.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The optical devices of the ADB function are nicely designed ancd well assembled, resulting in good beam quality.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chromatic effects have been noted along the cut-off line of the low beam. This is due to the technical solution, which generates the cut-off line being unable to suppress the chromatic effect entirely.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Electronic solutions are not fully optimized. The LED choice is valuable, but the implementation on the boards shows a considerable variation and a lack of optimization with basic process constraints.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO’s analysis process, as applied to the ID3 headlamp, is based on two distinct phases: a teardown and reverse engineering phase (optics, mechanics, assembly, electronics, thermal management analysis), and a performance <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/innovations-product-optimisations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">characterization phase</a> (characterization plan, headlamp control setup, measurements). Two identical products are used, one for each process phase.</p>
