<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The material is illuminated with an infrared femtosecond laser and the optical response generated at twice the fundamental frequency is analyzed. The observed variations, combined with the analysis of polarization states, reveal signatures directly linked to the crystalline structure.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike conventional optical approaches, this method allows for the detection of invisible structural defects while remaining completely non-destructive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Combining optical performance, mechanical robustness and complexity management in a single multispectral optical system: this is the challenge taken up by PISÉO with the visible-NIR-SWIR zoom.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Developing a multispectral optical zoom covering the visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) is a major technological challenge. Few companies are able to combine optical performance, mechanical robustness and industrial viability over such a broad spectrum.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO has demonstrated this with a multispectral continuous zoom project, illustrating its unique know-how in the design of complex optical systems, while meeting demanding specifications: precise numerical aperture, continuous x15 zoom factor, strict control of maximum authorized distortion, high MTF (Modulation Transfer Function: the system&#8217;s ability to reproduce fine details with contrast), while respecting constraints on size and field-of-view (FOV/DOV, i.e. the extent and depth of field of the observable scene).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Controlling chromaticity across a spectral range from a few hundred nanometers to more than one micron, without resorting to fragile fluorite glasses, required in-depth research into optical material combinations. Thanks to bibliographic and simulation work, PISÉO has selected special glasses that are transparent over the entire visible-NIR-SWIR spectrum, optimizing their dispersion for quasi-apochromatic &#8211; correcting out-of-focus errors across three or more wavelengths, consistent with numerical aperture and image quality constraints.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Controlling geometric aberrations</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The system had to maintain parfocality &#8211; the ability to maintain focus when changing focal length &#8211; between the visible, NIR and SWIR channels, despite their natural focusing differences, throughout the entire focal range. The integration of aspherical lenses has made it possible to effectively correct spherical aberrations, coma &#8211; the comma-shaped distortion of light points at the edge of the image &#8211; and astigmatism without multiplying the number of optical elements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result: a compact, high-performance system that respects space constraints and produces sharp images across the entire field, with controlled distortion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Mechanical and compactness constraints</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The zoom lens featured synchronized moving groups, with a high zoom ratio (x15), imposing significant mechanical constraints. PISÉO optimized the number of moving groups and types of movement, while anticipating manufacturing limitations: choice of lenses available from suppliers, limitation of costly aspheric surfaces, reduction in the variety of materials to simplify sourcing and guarantee manufacturability, while maintaining the expected MTF performance.</p>

This ray tracing tool was used to simulate and optimize every parameter: curvatures, thicknesses, spacings, indices, spectral performance, FOV/DOV and MTF quality, in multispectral and with parfocality.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A single file allows simultaneous analysis of different focal lengths and spectral bands, facilitating iteration, archiving and optimization.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The design followed a complex process: firstly, the system was preliminary design to select a robust optical combination (balancing the groups to ensure feasibility), then aberrations in each group were corrected, and finally achromatization was carried out, again by sub-assembly, using a selection of lenses to cover the entire target spectrum.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the system was complete, a further optimization phase was carried out to find the best compromise between complexity and performance (curvature, thickness at center or edge, bonded or unbonded elements, diversity of lenses, etc.).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This meticulous optimization phase led to a high-performance theoretical system, which PISÉO then made realistic through tolerancing studies, in order to further reduce the points of sensitivity of the assembly or arbitrate between variants: statistical analysis of the variations expected in production, to guarantee that a real product would remain compliant with requirements, even taking into account manufacturing and assembly margins.</p>

These applications called for a product that was robust (no fragile lenses), compact (integrated into an optronic ball), and ultra-high-performance (resolution, image sharpness and controlled distortion across the entire spectrum). The wide spectral range enables long-distance tracking, thanks to the reduced scattering of the atmosphere in SWIR, as well as identification (through combination with visible light).</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO was approached by a client in the automotive sector to optimize a head-up display (HUD) system. Although operational, this system did not meet the car manufacturer&#8217;s requirements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The device in question used an optical concept based on the projection of an image via two curved mirrors and an output window, which was then reflected onto the windshield. This system had to meet strict criteria imposed by the customer, such as overall size and visibility characteristics, while maintaining high image quality. In order to meet the car manufacturer&#8217;s objectives, the customer called on PISÉO to optimize its head-up display. After a critical analysis of the existing system (performance and construction), PISÉO&#8217;s engineers developed an <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/calculation-and-simulation-tools-prototyping/">optical design</a> that solved the problems identified.</p>

This type of technology, commonly used in the automotive industry, also has applications in defense, healthcare, manufacturing, and video games via augmented reality headsets.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The UHD system that PISÉO has been working on consists of an OLED screen, a set of mirrors, and the windshield as a projection screen. Each component must be optimized to provide excellent image quality that is legible and free of <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/our-skills/stray-light/">stray light</a>, while meeting constraints in terms of space, environment, industrialization, and cost.</p>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-boda2te" data-block-id="boda2te"><p class="stk-block-text__text">To meet the customer&#8217;s specific needs, PISÉO engineers used <a href="https://www.ansys.com/fr-fr/products/optics/ansys-zemax-opticstudio">Zemax OpticStudio</a> optical design and simulation software. The main focus was on the mirrors, a key factor in meeting space constraints while maintaining high image quality.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO engineers modeled the optical system in Zemax, optimized the design using their extensive experience in the field, and simulated the achievable performance. This work also made it possible to anticipate and correct recurring problems in augmented reality systems, such as ghost images, luminance management for day and night visibility, and distortion minimization. This optical design was carried out taking into account the industrial feasibility of the optics and the target cost.</p>

It is therefore crucial to fully understand and manage these risks to ensure the safety of users and those around them.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Furthermore, European regulations strictly govern the use of lasers and the assessment of their hazards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to their specific electro-optical characteristics and the development of solid-state or semiconductor sources that allow for low power and very compact system dimensions, lasers are increasingly used in automotive and medical applications. This deployment thus increases the population&#8217;s exposure to laser risk.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Laser safety therefore involves assessing the risk associated with exposure to <a href="https://www.inrs.fr/risques/rayonnements-optiques/rayonnement-laser.html">optical radiation</a>, classifying the device, implementing protective measures, and complying with regulations.</p>

The NF EN 60825 standard also imposes requirements in terms of signage, user training, and the implementation of protective measures.</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A concrete demonstration of this is our collaboration with an industry leader in the development of a large, flexible fingerprint sensor based on organic technology. This new-generation sensor paves the way for critical applications such as multi-fingerprint identity control in sensitive environments, and enhanced authentication on mobile devices.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For this sensor to live up to all its promises, it was necessary to take up a challenge that went far beyond simple lighting: to design a custom optical system adapted to particularly severe mechanical and electronic constraints. <div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-5k1gz8o" data-block-id="5k1gz8o"><p class="stk-block-text__text">Unlike conventional sensors, this device had to operate in a confined space, without a frontal light source, while ensuring a sharp, homogeneous image, whatever the conditions.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The project presented several major technical constraints:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Large surface area to be illuminated:</strong> As the sensor is much larger than a standard fingerprint sensor, uniform illumination had to be guaranteed from the center to the edges, without shadow zones or excessive variations.</li>



<li><strong>Thickness and integration:</strong> The flexible sensor had to fit into a compact device. The illumination system could not use sources above the finger (no front LEDs), but had to illuminate from the side or in the background, in the same way as e-reader screens, which are backlit from the edge.</li>



<li><strong>Organic technology and optical stacking:</strong> The sensor is made up of innovative optical and electronic layers (organic polymers, thin films, etc.). A light guide had to be integrated to distribute the LED light under the footprint. The guide, in direct contact with other layers with no air space, radically altered light propagation and extraction. In addition, an angular filter was added above the sensor to allow only near-perpendicular light rays to pass through &#8211; a prerequisite for obtaining a clear image of the impression.</li>



<li><strong>Demanding operating conditions:</strong> The system had to operate in a variety of environments (e.g. variable ambient light) while maintaining high contrast between the ridges and valleys of the print. Stray light and unwanted reflections also had to be prevented from blurring the image.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Faced with such complexity, an empirical approach would have been time-consuming and uncertain. What was needed was a detailed understanding of the optical phenomena involved, in order to arrive at a reliable, optimized solution. This is where PISÉO made the difference, mobilizing its expertise in optical design and advanced modeling to meet the technical requirement.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main elements of the illumination system were:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Lateral LEDs: </strong>chosen for their angle of emission and lens-free efficiency. The coupling with the light guide was carefully adjusted to limit losses.</li>



<li><strong>Integrated light guide: </strong>featuring microstructures just a few microns in size, inspired by flat-screen backlighting. Objective: to distribute light uniformly and at a precise angle.</li>



<li><strong>Multi-layer angular filter:</strong> modeled to block rays that are too inclined, allowing only light reflected directly from the ridges of the footprint to pass through.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>3D modeling of the complete system:</strong> One of PISÉO&#8217;s strengths in this project was to use advanced optical simulation tools to create a digital twin of the biometric sensor. Each element &#8211; LED, light guide with its micro-structures, angular filter, and even the finger &#8211; was modeled to predict the system&#8217;s behavior. This approach made it possible to virtually test numerous configurations and identify optimal solutions even before physical prototypes were produced.</p>

Simulations were used to highlight the system&#8217;s key optical phenomena, enabling both teams to make informed technical decisions.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This approach enabled us to :</p>

<li>Predict optical performance before manufacturing.</li>



<li>Reduce technical uncertainties and the need for prototypes.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, the first version of the guide provided good uniformity, but the light cone was too wide. By fine-tuning the microstructures, PISÉO has refocused the light emission, increasing the proportion of truly useful light.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Simulations also revealed the impact of the material surrounding the guide (absence of free air, polymer layers), highlighting unexpected optical losses. PISÉO then recommended mechanical and optical adjustments to correct this.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The angular filter, difficult to grasp intuitively, was also modeled in detail. The results explained certain defects observed on the first prototypes (image edge blur), enabling them to be quickly corrected.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Throughout the process, the customer benefited from complete transparency on the optical phenomena involved in his system, such as the operation of the light guide, the impact of the angular filter and the importance of the choice of materials. The results of the simulations carried out by PISÉO made it possible to explain precisely the observations made by the customer during its own development tests. This in-depth understanding facilitated design optimization and reinforced the customer&#8217;s confidence in the product&#8217;s final performance.</p>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-1epi4qf" data-block-id="1epi4qf"><p class="stk-block-text__text">Modeling a human finger involves more than simply reproducing a 2D pattern: its complex topography (ridges and valleys) and optical properties (scattering through skin layers) must also be taken into account. To this end, PISÉO conducted a <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-laboratory/photometry-laboratory/photometric-performance-measurements/">photometric measurement campaign</a>, using an optical goniometer to analyze light reflection on real fingers.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The data collected revealed a dual response: a reflection due to the skin&#8217;s natural moisture, and a wider diffusion. These characteristics were translated into BRDF (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidirectional_reflectance_distribution_function">Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function</a>) and integrated into the optical model.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result: the <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/calculation-and-simulation-tools-prototyping/">simulation</a> generated imprint images very close to reality. Compared with the physical images, they confirmed the accuracy of the model. Even the customer&#8217;s own image processing (by reference subtraction) was successfully simulated, revealing the details of the impression.</p>

Tests on the final prototype confirmed the expected performance: the illumination is uniform, sufficient to distinguish every detail of the fingerprint, and the image obtained is sharp and contrasty across the entire sensor surface. Thanks to PISÉO&#8217;s advice, several crucial adjustments (choice of LEDs, design of the light guide, refinement of the angular filter, etc.) were made, leading to a fully operational device. The customer was thus able to refine his design and launch his product with confidence.</p></div>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This new-generation sensor opens the way to concrete, mission-critical applications: multi-finger identification terminals in airports, enhanced security for mobile transactions, etc.</p>

Our equipment also allows us to accurately measure specific properties (transmittance and reflectance) of materials used in optical systems regardless of their applications. Other properties, such as BRDF (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function), essential for the simulation of diffusing materials, are measured at a partner laboratory under the control of PISÉO. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The VERITAS (NASA, 2031) and EnVision (ESA, 2028) space missions will carry an advanced spectroscopy instrument, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_Emissivity_Mapper">Venus Emissivity Mapper (VEM)</a>, which is designed to map the surface of Venus. Developed by a consortium that includes the <a href="https://www.dlr.de/en">DLR</a> (German Aerospace Center), <a href="https://lesia.obspm.fr/-Presentation-du-LESIA-.html">LESIA</a> (Laboratoire d’Etudes Spatiales et d’Instrumentation), and <a href="https://cnes.fr/en">CNES</a> (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales), the VEM will operate in extreme environments while detecting very low-intensity infrared signals. Stray light is a major source of disturbance that can compromise the quality of measurements by saturating an instrument’s sensors and altering the data. To prevent these risks on the VEM and ensure reliable performance during its crucial missions, LESIA entrusted <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/our-skills/stray-light/">the analysis of stray light</a> issues to PISÉO.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this context, the main objective of the mission entrusted to PISÉO was to use our exprertise and advanced simulation tools to identify the different sources of stray light, quantify their influence, and propose actions for reduction.</p>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-tzzn5s4" data-block-id="tzzn5s4"><p class="stk-block-text__text">The VEM instrument (called <strong>VenSpec-M</strong> for the EnVision mission) is a multispectral imager designed to map the surface of Venus and its lower atmosphere. Mapping is accomplished by observation through narrow atmospheric windows in the near-infrared spectral range. This allows the VEM to detect thermal emissions such as volcanic activity, surface rock composition, and water and cloud formation.<br>To image the surface of Venus, the instrument features an optical design consisting of a single lens on a filter assembly composed of 14 individual spectral bands, and a two-lens relay optical system to reform the spectrally-filtered image on an InGaAs detector.<br>Given the low intensity of the scientific signal that the instrument must detect, any external contribution to the effective signal-to-noise ratio must be studied, and if possible, mitigated. As with most optical instruments, one of the main sources of interference is stray light.<br><br><br></p></div>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-lawhozb" data-block-id="lawhozb"><p class="stk-block-text__text">In collaboration with LESIA and DLR, PISÉO identified multiple sources of stray light that could potentially affect the quality of detection provided by the VEM. We then quantified the impact of these sources to assess the performance achievable by the VEM under its intended operating conditions.<br> <br>These are the different sources of stray light identified by PISÉO :<br><strong> </strong><br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Reflections on the lenses</strong> : even treated lenses can generate stray radiation that is detected by the sensor.<br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Reflections on mechanical elements</strong> : despite the use of a baffle, internal mechanical elements can generate unwanted radiation, depending on their geometries.<br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Reflections on the sensor</strong> : InGaAs sensors like the one used in the VEM can reflect up to 30% of infrared radiation.<br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Interference (&#8220;crosstalk&#8221;) between filters</strong> : the location of the 14 IR spectral bands is crucial for minimizing crosstalk.<br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Materials and treatments :</strong> the optical properties and treatments (in particular, their diffusion) of the materials used significantly influence the propagation of light in optical systems.<br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Dust contamination :</strong> particles generated during takeoff increase the diffusion of radiation..<br><strong>•</strong> <strong>Solar influence :</strong> sun glare can saturate the sensor, depending on the orientation and launch date.<br> <br>In order to precisely quantify these sources contribution to stray light, the VEM optical system was modeled in a powerful ray-tracing tool, and simulations were performed.<br><br></p></div>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-g0wpba7" data-block-id="g0wpba7"><p class="stk-block-text__text">LESIA used Zemax to design an imaging optical system that optimizes image formation on the sensor while minimizing optical aberrations. However, although PISÉO also has Zemax, our analysis of stray rays outside the main image was done with LightTools – a more suitable non-sequential simulation software. LightTools allows the modeling of sources and surfaces to study irradiance maps and intensity indicators, thus identifying the contributions of stray rays, including &#8220;ghost images&#8221;.<br>PISÉO exploited LightTools to its limits. In doing so, we determined the origin of the stray rays, evaluated their energy in relation to the main image, and proposed corrective actions. Moreover, the LightTools &#8220;imaging module&#8221;, used in beta version, made it possible to isolate the critical paths of stray light and optimize the results by focusing on the most relevant trajectories, thus guaranteeing a good signal-to-noise ratio.<br> <br>The optical simulation used a far-field source to represent the instrument’s field of view (FoV). An approach combining an ideal lens and a point source, positioned at three strategic locations (optical axis, horizontal edge, and vertical edge), allowed for accurate analysis of stray rays relative to the main image. These analyses highlighted distortions and aberrations due to an excessively wide FoV, causing artifacts and asymmetries on the sensor. An optimization of the optical design then corrected these defects, aligning the simulated performance with the system’s real-world requirements.<br> <br>The lenses were accurately modeled in LightTools by integrating material characteristics and optical properties, including Fresnel losses and internal reflections. The filters were simulated from a mechanical model, with specific surface treatments based on the spectral transmittance data provided by CILAS. The surfaces of the filters and spectral bands were modeled with distinct treatments to ensure high accuracy. The diaphragm, treated with a black absorbent paint validated by CNES, was designed to absorb non-reflected rays.<br> <br>Ultimately, the analysis of stray light, with a precise threshold, revealed that the main sources of disturbance were internal reflections in the sapphire window and lenses, and interference between filters. Anti-reflective coatings were subsequently optimized to reduce these reflections, and studies were conducted to evaluate the impact of dust and surface roughness. Moreover, irradiance maps were used to identify critical areas and refine treatments to minimize stray light.<br> <br>Analysis of the impact of the mechanical system on stray light revealed that internal reflections can cause ghost images. To counteract this, PISÉO used and then adjusted a mathematical diffusion model, supplemented by BRDF measurements at 850 nm and 1550 nm. These data made it possible to precisely evaluate the absorbing materials and select the most suitable one to reduce stray light.<br> <br>Finally, the analysis evaluated the “off-axis” stray light caused by the contribution of the Sun. The asymmetric deflector used for the VERITAS mission was modeled to simulate the interactions between visible and infrared rays. A uniform planar source was adopted to improve the efficiency of the simulations, reducing the detection threshold and the computation times. These optimizations made it possible to choose a suitable material and design for effectively reducing stray light.<br></p></div>

This requires the use of optical projection systems with lenses with no aberrations.<br><strong>Absence of chromatism :</strong> Chromatism is an optical aberration that causes colors to change. In imaging, it can be induced by optical systems that are not sufficiently optimized to reduce its effect.<br><strong>Brightness – level of illumination on the ground and uniformity :</strong> this characteristic is essential to perceive the projected image correctly in any environment. In the case of a logo projector, it requires the use of a sufficiently powerful light source and an illumination system coupled with an optical imaging system.</p></div>

<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-noklpa3" data-block-id="noklpa3"><p class="stk-block-text__text">To meet the high technical requirements, a custom solution was designed and prototyped by PISÉO engineers: they developed  an ultra-compact logo projector that combines an optical imaging system and an optical illumination system.<br>The Optical Imaging System integrates a limited number of dedicated lenses with aspherical surfaces. This combination of lenses makes it possible to correct optical aberrations while preserving the economic competitiveness of the system. Particular attention was paid to the materials used in order to prevent chromatic aberrations and preserve high injection quality during the manufacture of the lenses.<br>The Optical Illumination System integrates a high-luminance white LED that provides sufficient optical efficiency, and a flux collection lens that optimizes the illumination of the mask while respecting the constraints imposed by the optical imaging system.<br>The design of the logo projector followed a rigorous sequential process to arrive at a robust and competitive industrial solution. The skills in the development of optical illumination and imaging systems of PISÉO engineers were put to use during this development. They also mobilized their design and optical simulation support tools to quickly evaluate the concepts they imagined. In particular, they used LightTools for the optical illumination system and Zemax for the optical imaging system. The false color and realistic renderings made it possible to accurately determine the achievable visual performance. <br>Tests in PISÉO&#8217;s optical laboratory made it possible to characterize the candidate LEDs precisely and make an informed choice of components, as well as to validate the performance of a prototype.<br><br><a id="_msocom_1"></a> </p></div>

These anomalies can be caused by an inadequate arrangement of LEDs, poorly designed diffusers, or <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-engineering-posts/light-guide-design/">light guides </a>that do not direct the light correctly.<br>To identify the precise causes, PISÉO engineers followed a rigorous methodology. The first step consisted of a luminance mapping in <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-laboratory-posts/">the laboratory</a>, which provided a visualization of the distribution of light over the entire surface of the lamp, highlighting the problem areas. A critical analysis of the lamp construction was then conducted, focusing on the physical design of the optical components, including the arrangement of the LEDs and the materials used.<br> <br>A key point of the analysis concerns the geometry of the light guides. The engineers thus examined in detail the structure of the guides to identify design defects that could lead to light leaks. These leaks often result from poor light guidance, where light escapes or disperses in an uncontrolled manner, causing an irregular distribution. Finally, the optical system was modeled in <a href="https://www.synopsys.com/optical-solutions/lighttools.html">LightTools</a>, where a simulation allowed the engineers to locate the sources of the defects and propose optimal solutions.</p></div>

It is very energetic and offers advantages for disinfection applications or industrial chemical processes such as PVC manufacturing. The systems used in these applications integrate UVC sources such as discharge lamps or LEDs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO stands out for its expertise in designing custom LED-based UV-C sources adapted to the specific needs of its customers in various application areas. This expertise has proven particularly valuable during the COVID-19 epidemic, which generated a significant increase in the need for disinfection solutions. At the same time, the performance of UV-C LEDs has improved considerably in recent years, as shown in our <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/press-news/uv-c-leds-at-the-time-of-covid-19/">UVC LED report</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mercury-based UV tubes, historically used for disinfection applications, will be gradually withdrawn from the market by 2027.
