<div class="wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-lvr72v2" data-block-id="lvr72v2"><p class="stk-block-text__text">After an in-depth study of their optical and electrical characteristics, PISÉO experts chose and integrated very small, high-resolution imaging sensors. To this end, <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-laboratory-posts/optical-imaging-laboratory/">the PISÉO imaging laboratory</a> evaluated the performance of these advanced sensors by carrying out measurements of MTF 50 on the object side, SNR and distortion. The tests also made it possible to assess the deformations generated by the rolling-sutter of the sensors. The results of these evaluations were taken into account to size and develop the LED lighting, as well as the electronics and on-board software. These characterizations associated with the development work ultimately made it possible to produce images of unrivaled quality for the client&#8217;s application.</p></div>

For this project, PISÉO engineers, specialized in LED lighting, therefore designed specific lighting which provides, in all circumstances, all the illumination, colorimetry and contrasts necessary for the image sensor. In addition, to overcome the problems of image distortion linked to the use of rolling-shutter CMOS sensors, LED control electronics have been designed specifically for this product.</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PISÉO&#8217;s expertise in optical imaging and LED lighting was critical in designing a device integrating a market lens adapted to the client&#8217;s new sensor.  The process started with a detailed analysis of the optical characteristics of the sensor, followed by the search for a suitable lens in the market to ensure optimal performance. At the same time, the team carried out a pre-study of the lighting system. This had to meet the photometric and colorimetric needs expressed by the client, be compatible with the existing control platform, and integrate into a 5mm endoscope tube. Optical fibers associated with an optical coupling system were favored for the illumination system.</p>

The final choice was made by comparing the expected image qualities (resolution, aberrations, chromatism) and Chief Ray Angle (CRA). This last characteristic is particularly critical for the performance of the sensor-lens pair.</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the characteristics of the sensor and the lens had been defined, PISÉO proceeded with the development of the endoscope demonstrator. For this, PISÉO engineers mobilized their skills in optical and mechanical engineering. They also specified suitable LED lighting using optical fibers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The extremely small dimensions of the system represented a significant challenge for the mechanical assembly of the optical components. It was necessary to define totally new solutions to ensure the very precise assembly of the whole.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Advances in optical-photonic and artificial intelligence technologies have spurred the development of medical imaging diagnostic systems, providing a valuable solution for the early detection of skin cancers. These systems integrate essential components such as image processing software, a camera, and LED lighting specially designed to optimize imaging conditions, thus capturing the details, relief and color of the skin.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, it is often difficult to find commercial LED lights that meet the specific requirements of these diagnostic systems. This frequently leads to the custom design of lighting, particularly in the case of devices for diagnosing skin cancer by imaging.</p>

Specific “freeform” lenses have been designed to optimize illumination. The optical system was modeled in LightTools and performance simulations performed. The prototype was then specified and its components assembled in the PISÉO laboratory. Subassemblies such as the LED card and optics were manufactured by trusted partners. A thermal study was also carried out by PISÉO to size the heatsink used to cool the LEDs.</p></div>

Thanks to their expertise in optical risks, our engineers carried out this assessment in parallel with the design. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Specialized in the development, production, and certification of high-tech products for endoscopic applications, this customer wished to benefit from PISÉO’s <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-and-engineering/skills/">skills</a> in developing <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-and-engineering/optical-benches/">tailor-made optical test bench</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Test benches are essential tools for measuring the optical performance of medical devices such as illumination systems used particularly in medical applications, more specifically surgery.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After devising a light projector integrated into an endoscope-type surgical robot, the customer wanted to measure the relative illumination delivered by this projector during its manufacture. PISÉO designed and produced a dedicated optical measurement bench for this purpose.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To meet the customer&#8217;s needs, PISÉO designed the measurement bench&nbsp; to manage the plurality of lighting profiles produced by the projector. The projector uses LED-type light sources that have various emission lobe angles, but also laser-type light sources whose beam is collimated. PISÉO therefore had to consider all the wavelengths between 400 nm and 850 nm emitted by these different light sources to design and build this test bench.</p>

The profiles measured in this way make it possible to verify in a simple and robust way, in production, that the light emission profiles of the projector comply with the characteristics expected of the projector once integrated. They then specified the architecture of the bench and its components including camera, lens, mechanical and electrical interfaces, then carried out the detailed design.</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because the lens of the camera used on this bench generates distortion and field curvature, it was necessary to first perform a geometric calibration to correct optical aberrations. For this, PISÉO used a checkerboard pattern, which made it possible to characterize the optical aberration of the system and to calculate the correction coefficients to be used by the algorithms for processing the captured images. The geometric calibration thus carried out makes it possible to draw up an illumination map meeting the precision required by the customer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second step was a radiometric calibration. This considered the diffusion characteristics of the frosted screen integrated into the measurement bench, the optical transmission of the objective, its vignetting, the sensitivity, as well as the spectral response of the camera sensor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For this, measuring devices from the PISÉO laboratory calibrated under <a href="https://www.cofrac.fr/">ISO 17025 accreditation (scope available on <a href="http://www.cofrac.fr">www.cofrac.fr</a>),</a> and more particularly the CAS140D spectroradiometer, were used to establish a reference illumination map.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The camera on the bench then acquired images of the frosted screen, with different integration times in order to process illumination profiles whose variations would the camera might not otherwise not be able to detect. These images were processed by an image processing algorithm developed by PISÉO experts. The algorithm is used to calculate the radiometric correction coefficients specific to the measurement bench, by comparing the calculated illumination map with the measured reference map.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This radiometric calibration has been validated for all wavelengths of the light spectrum used, including the visible and near infrared range, between 400 nm and 850 nm.</p>

This software then makes it possible to visualize the image of illumination as well as the horizontal and vertical profiles, and to choose the point of the image from which one wants to study these profiles. It generates the illumination map from the images acquired according to a precise sequence and image processing adapted to the singularities of the light projector. It also manages the measurement bench by triggering an illumination measurement, by saving or loading an image. Finally, it gives the possibility of exporting an illumination map and/or the illumination profiles. PISÉO developed the human-machine interface (HMI), image processing, camera control and image management parts in Python.</p></div>

This resulted in a compact, lightweight but robust design that could be moved by one person, be used on a workbench, and provide accurate, reproducible, and repeatable measurements over time. The cost price has been optimized from the design phase. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the measurement bench was assembled, PISÉO engineers carried out a series of tests to check its performance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, they did geometric and radiometric calibrations. The verifications focused on the calculations of the illumination profiles produced by a diffuse light source and by a collimated light source, which were compared with the profiles measured by devices in the PISÉO laboratory. The difference observed was less than the precision required by the customer, so the measuring bench was validated.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the end of these tests, PISÉO recorded the geometric and radiometric calibrations in the measuring bench. The engineers set up management by serial number to manage the different copies of the measuring bench. They also compiled a user manual, a manufacturing file and a technical report gathering all the results of the tests carried out on the bench to allow the customer to understand the device’s performance.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the past thirty years, endoscope technology for imaging has been developing and expanding its field of application. This technology is best known and used in the medical field for diagnosis and surgery. The flexible endoscope, made up of optical fibers , helps reach parts of the anatomy where access is sinuous (esophagus, stomach, colon, etc.). The rigid endoscope, in which the stem is equipped with lenses, allows for the exploration of an area in a rectilinear field and facilitates the detection and surgical treatment of tumors, infections, or malformations by minimizing the invasive nature of the intervention. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Multiple innovations have largely contributed to the improvement of the endoscope. The camera associated with the endoscope has, in particular, seen numerous developments. A true product of technology, it has benefited from improvements made to mobile phone cameras in terms of size and image quality. More compact, with better image definition and fields of view of up to 170°, endoscopic cameras are particularly appreciated by surgeons. They provide access to additional areas of the patient&#8217;s body with less trauma and faster recovery times.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>In order to offer patients and the medical profession less invasive and more efficient solutions, manufacturers of medical equipment face real challenges. They must not only find innovative solutions in miniaturization and improvement of image quality but also ensure that these solutions are reliable and manufacturable . </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is in this context that PISÉO , a center of innovation and expertise specializing in the integration of optical-photonic technologies, was entrusted with a project to develop an optical system for rigid endoscopes. This included the study of a set of very small lenses adapted to the characteristics of a new sensor and the specific needs of one of its customers while taking into account integration and manufacturability constraints.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The dual objectives of miniaturization of the optical system and performance is a real challenge in the design of the optical system of an endoscope. In this project, the design phase involved taking into account specific technical constraints such as the diameter of the endoscope and the lenses, the size of the image, and the resolution of the sensor (number of pixels, frequency, contrast, spectral response, &#8230;), as well as working distance and depth of field.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Obtaining a quality image results as much from an optical design adapted to the system’s envelope as from the integration of a sensor, the characteristics of which must be perfectly known (angle of acceptance of the rays, resolution, etc.). The specifications required consideration of the integration of the optical part in two endoscope channels placed in parallel, with sensors arranged side-by-side or back-to-back using prism systems. It was, therefore, necessary to take into account not only the optical quality of the cameras but also the adaptation of the two channels and the size constraints of the final system. The optimization of the design and performance of the system was carried out through simulations using <a href="https://www.zemax.com/">the optical design software ZEMAX</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The endoscope&#8217;s lighting system is stronger. It must be adapted to the area studied and as integrated as possible. The light must be white and bright, optimal for distinguishing the most subtle tissue lesions, for example. It may also be necessary for the system to produce wavelengths close to infrared to detect fluorescent markers, in particular facilitating the diagnosis of cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions. PISÉO &#8216;s expertise in the field of LED technology and its applications provided access to solutions that are particularly optimized in terms of the light spectrum and lighting levels.</p>

This work was carried out through in-depth discussions with the company charged with manufacturing the system. In particular, at the optical level, tolerancing work has been carried out. This work consisted of evaluating the performance degradation of the system linked to manufacturing defects or component placements.<br>Various parameters had to be considered: dimensions of the optical elements, optical surfaces, materials (index, constringent , homogeneity, etc.), supports, and optomechanical assembly. Thanks to its <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-and-engineering/skills/">skills </a>and <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/optical-consulting-and-engineering/technical-means/">tools,</a> PISÉO ensured the performance of the entire system once it is assembled and mass-produced.</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Phototherapy, unlike light therapy, is a treatment that uses visible and non-visible optical radiation from light (UVA, UVB, near infrared) to produce effects on human tissue.Its applications are numerous: cancer treatment, psoriasis, eczema, infant jaundice, ophthalmology &#8230; The light sources used for these treatments can be of the laser, laser diode or LED type.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within the framework of this project, we worked on a product intended to accelerate the cicatrization of the skin thanks to a targeted optical radiation in visible and near infrared and functioning autonomously by use of a battery.In particular, we have optimized the optical coupling between the LEDs and the light guide to significantly improve the radiation on the skin and the autonomy of the device.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To carry out a critical analysis of the construction of the system, quantify and improve energy efficiency and radiation effect by optimizing the integration of the LED light sources.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">UV LEDs have achieved performances that now allow to consider disinfection solutions using this technology to replace the discharge sources.To make the most of UV LED sources, it is nevertheless necessary to clearly define the performance objectives expected at the application level (irradiance, uniformity, spectral distribution) and to know how to integrate them appropriately, taking into account the interaction between UV radiation and micro-organisms or particular operating conditions of UV LEDs. The main objective was to develop a UV LED illuminator <a href="https://piseo.fr/en/press-news/uv-c-leds-at-the-time-of-covid-19/">able to kills certain type of bacteries</a>.</p>
